When parents are having a baby, whether it is their first of third, diapers play a huge role, and deciding to use cloth diapers over disposable is personal. I know they did work for us with our first to fourth child. Work was involved just like in any sort of frugal savings effort.
Cloth Diaper Decisions:
Disposable diapers are expensive. Everyone knows this fact. Cloth diapers are expensive the first time, after that the savings are HUGE!
I bought used. Yes. Used. They were in mint condition and it was from a store that sold brand new cloth diapers. Stocking up on several from newborn to toddler is important. More diapers are needed in the beginning right after birth so those I bought used. After that I bought several new name brands.
One more trick to try….buy the old fashion inserts (3 fold) and use the covers. I just used my 3 fold diapers in the cloth cover, not the pocket. Many more uses came from that idea 🙂
Chemicals In The Disposable Diapers
Chemicals are part of the disposable diapers. There are some that have come out with a more healthy option such as “Honest” diapers. My children were older so I was never able to try those out.
I know that some of the chemicals could have long term effects, but what are they? How scary is that? For me…..pretty scary. When trying to protect my baby from harm, I am putting harm on him everyday.
Lately I look at all labels and lotions to see what I am putting on my childrens’ bodies. They are pretty important to me.
Checking out all of the ingredients on the back of the diaper box on google will surprise many moms.

Cloth diaper decisions provided a safe way for me to diaper my children. This outweighs any cost related reason. Also, I love this world and all of the beauty in it. For many years I have enjoyed it, and would like my children to do the same. The fact that disposable diapers sit in landfills for several years is disturbing.
Work is involved in cloth diapers, but isn’t that true of any frugal savings decisions?
