Family memories with your kids is something that they will reminisce about when they are older. The memories will involve details that you may not have found important, but they did. Each time we tell a story it has something a little different in it. A new piece of information that will make it more or less intriguing, but I enjoy hearing the stories from my kids perspective.
Getting together with my cousins or other family members we will go down memory lane with all of the adventures (both good and bad) that are dear to us. Some of the family will remember the event one way while another one’s memory is completely different.
If people in general will cherish their past both good and bad then the future holds great things. I say this because holding on to memories has helped me to grow. As family members have passed from this world having fond memories of them helps to keep a small part of them with you each day.
Movies
Taking kids to see good movies is a lot of fun. Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Angry Birds, and Nemo are some of the movies that have seen together as a family or on special nights. Summertime and Christmas are the best times to go for the newest movies. One time while we were watching a movie they sent out a broadcast and we all had to pile into the bathrooms due to a tornado. My son NEVER forgot that night.
Repeat the same event each year. For example, every year we watch Home Alone. Therefore, every year we all laugh and look forward to the planned Christmas night where we all watch it together. Next is “The Grinch” which again is a planned night for our family. We make special treats, play Grinch games, dress in Grinch PJ’s then watch the movie. Several fun events happen before the actual movie begins. Which in turn creates memories and family bonding.
Special Outings
Going to hit golf balls, or play at the local arcade can be special outings. Family memories can also be made at a restaurant over a milkshake, a park playing catch, or ice cream at DQ. Special outings do not have to be expensive….just fun. Most of our special outings are now included on our family bucket list each season. You see, my husband and I have a future vision of a very close family. That doesn’t happen by accident. Creating a close family is teaching them to spend time with us, and not alone.
Our dream is to have all of our children live close enough that we can see them often. If that doesn’t happen of course we will also be happy for them, but having special outings with our grandchildren is something we also look forward to.
Camping and Vacations
Camping in our new RV is one of the most recent way we have begun to make memories. Lots of camping memories have occurred in our tent. Some good and some bad, but mostly good. Although we all agree that RV camping is better.
For years’ we have taken our children on vacations. Having a family vacation means so much to us. Being able to get away for a week and just relax is important. Each year we try to go somewhere different, but even if we end up in some of the same beaches or hiking spots we still enjoy our family time.
Car Rides
Car rides provide fun, entertainment, family memories, and boredom all rolled into one vehicle. I have many car ride memories from church adventures, family, and friends. Play a car license plate game, or tic tac toe the kids will love the one on one time.
Morning Time
In the morning when we all first get up we like to snuggle on the couch. Whether it is summer, winter, fall or spring this is what we do in the first 15 min. Kids are only little once. Age brings on independence and less snuggles.
My sons’ are older now and we do not get snuggles on the couch. All ages bring something new and memorable to the table. Now I look forward to see what habits they create in the morning. One of my son’s starts his day with a Bible study, then begins drawing or painting. Another one likes to look out our picture window at the birds’ or squirrels.
It is very rewarding to create a warm cozy, close family that cherishes memories. Not all things have to cost money, but end up being valuable.
