Homeschool Preschool Letter Y Activities

June 20, 2024 By Michelle Knight Leave a Comment

This week we are using the Yarrow plant for our homeschool preschool studies. This plant holds so many great value and my favorite part is the plant it once theory. My favorite plants are perennials because they grow and multiple each year. For me that is great because plants are expensive and this saves money.

I love teaching plants and learning about them with children. Helping them to develop a love of nature and the beauty that grows from caring for something is fulfilling. As preschoolers all of my boys’ loved to walk around our yard and look at flowers. I would get in several blossoms on Tulips and Daffodils in the spring. They loved my flowers and me so much they would grab a handful. Picking the flowers wasn’t the problem, it was grabbing them up roots and all. So, I decided to teach them how to pick my flowers for me and not destroy the plant. Currently I have three that help me in my gardening adventures and one that grows his own plants. Starting when they are young it’s important.

Letter Y Handwriting for Preschool

Handwriting is an important skill to perfect. I am still working on mine. Practice makes perfect, but in preschool it is just about getting it legible. Grab a box of crayons and print off several of my Letter Y handwriting sheets. Let them try it in every color. There is no wrong or right way yet, just let them have fun trying.

Letter Y is an easy letter to learn, and it ties into phonics well. Teaching kids to trace the letter y is easy. First have them start at the top and draw a v. That is how I taught my children. Then after they draw the v, don’t pick up the crayon, keep going all of the way down to the end of the Y. Next, on the back write out the word “yarrow”. See if they can mimic the letters. At this point they have tried them all, it is going to take them a minute to get it, but they will.

Homeschool Preschool Science

Science with flowers is easy. Flower dissection is an engaging way for preschoolers to learn the anatomy of flowers. First set up with supplies such as tweezers, a piece of cardboard (use as a tray), and a magnifying glass. Have them slowly take apart the flower and help you identify or name the parts.

Symmetry is great with flowers. Have them fold a flower in half. Instructions with this will teach homeschool preschool kids about the nature around them and visual awareness.

Teaching Phonics With Flowers

Preschool Play and Learn has a great printable teaching game with flowers. Flowers are a great way to learn beginning sounds for preschoolers. Matching games are easy to make and fun to play. Have a picture of the flower and lay it next to the letter is another way to play a matching game.

Find the vowel in each name, then find the letter and have them circle it. I use a chalkboard because it erases and isn’t messy. Making silly songs is another way to teach phonics. Homeschool preschool phonics with flowers is adaptable to learning needs of each child.

Easy Art and Picture Study

I love to teach picture study to preschool. They see the world through an innocent and real lense. One time in particular I was teaching my youngest son and we were doing art. Whatever we were drawing had a purplish color. To me it looked like a dark shade of indigo, but he was adamant that it was purple. Whatever the color ended up as the point was he learned to see the colors he needed. Back then I would use YouTube videos to help them draw the flowers or object I was teaching.

Allow them to see a good picture of the Yarrow. After they have the picture in front of them tell them to draw what they see. It will be a a great way to incorporated different color schemes and varied art techniques. Introduce them while they are young because this allows it to grow with them.

I love doing flower studies with preschoolers, and it is a great way to teach many subjects from one topic. For more tips on how to homeschool frugally sign up for my newsletter.
