How to Lower Laundry Costs Without Fewer Loads

February 18, 2026 By Michelle Knight Leave a Comment

In America, almost every family is trying to figure out how to lower laundry costs. Nobody thinks of doing fewer loads because that would cause a buildup. Laundry is a daily chore just like doing the dishes. Each chore has its time during the day to complete. If you do one load of dishes a day, one load of laundry each day, this helps with running the home.

Our home currently has five living in it. We homeschool, do activities, have animals and live a pretty normal life. I do one load of laundry each day. Wash a load, dry a load, fold a load and put away a load. this helps me to keep on top of the laundry.

Keeping at the one load a day task, here are a few ways that you can maintain the same pace, and still save money:

Use Less Detergent and Incorporate White Vinegar

Using less detergent is one of the best ways to make it last longer. We make our own laundry detergent and that saves us money too. But, if you’re worried the less laundry detergent will make your clothes dirty, it won’t. More laundry detergent will clog the washer. If you use store brands, and fill it to their marking line, I encourage you to try a little bit less. Make our own marker and see how long it lasts.

Next, try using white vinegar. A simple, yet affordable approach to laundry. One thing for sure it helps with is towels. They will come out soft and smell good. Vinegar acts as a great fabric softener. In addition to these ships, buy in bulk to save even more money. Compound each of these laundry tips to get the most savings.

Wash Clothes in Cold Water

Hot water costs money. How many different places do you use hot water? Laundry, dishes, showers, and others not mentioned. Try to limit the laundry to cold only. Every little bit of savings adds up.

Benefits of washing clothes in cold water:

First, cold water is more gentle on clothes. Second, fading doesn’t happen as fast. and third graphics on t-shirts will be preserved longer. Implementing all of these tips will lower laundry costs.

Make Your Own Fabric Softener and Lower Laundry Costs

As mentioned previously, white vinegar is a softener. On the internet there are many recipes for fabric softeners. Making your own will take more time, but save more money. Rising grocery costs prove that to be true with detergents, and other non-consumables.

In addition to saving money there will be no harsh chemicals in your homemade fabric softener. Total control over the ingredients is in the hands of the maker. There is no buildup on clothes, and the hazards of chemicals getting on your children’s skin to cause rashes are more minimal.

Clean and Maintain Washer and Dryer

Maintenance is frugal stewardship and great for lowering laundry costs. Cleaning and touching up your washer and dryer to keep them functioning saves a lot of money. Regular cleanings of the lint dryer improve efficiency. Taking care of your washer and running white vinegar through it for a rinse cycle to clean it out is frugal management. Buying a new machine is very expensive, but maintaining the old one to see how long it will lost if very frugal.

Setting up a simple weekly maintenance routine is helpful to stay on top of a good running washer and dryer. First, leave the door open to the washer occasionally. Next, wipe down the rubber gasket weekly. Then, inspect the hoses to make sure they are all functioning properly and in good condition. Finally, as I mentioned above let it run a rinse cycle on cold water. I run mine with white vinegar. Not a lot, about 2 teaspoons. Enough to clean it and not ruin the washer.
