12 Frugal Home Energy Saving Tips

January 4, 2022 By Michelle Knight Leave a Comment

Well, 2022 started off with a cold spell. We have been trying to be energy efficient and save on our heat for the really cold weather. It’s here. I thought I would share a few of my planned strategies of a frugal home savings for energy in our home.

Taking steps to begin a more frugal lifestyle is work. Planning in the fall for winter has helped me to have a vision on how to be warm, and not give up our life savings. In the past we have covered our back porch in plastic to keep the wind out. This year, we did not choose to do that again, but did cover our kitchen window. Even covering one window with plastic has made a huge difference in the heat. Our front room is off the kitchen, so it is a few degrees warmer now.

Everything is more expensive it seems, so what we can control, we do! Hopefully, one of my 12 frugal home tips will be useful for energy efficiency in your home.

  1. clothing

2. sunlight

3. Cook with the oven instead of the crockpot (it heats up the kitchen)

4. close up all drafts

5. space heaters

6. lower the temperature

7. use a fireplace (if applicable)

8. close off unused area’s

9. Insulate all windows and doors

10. window treatments such as blinds, curtains, or quilts

11. install solar panels to increase heat

12. upgrade furnace to one that saves on heating (did that a few years ago)

We have tried to implement what we can by sealing off rooms at night, caulking/covering in the fall, and lowering the thermostat to keep expenses down. We do not own a fireplace, and our home would have to be remodeled to accommodate one, so we bought two space heaters this year. So far our bill is still coming in pretty low.

Saving on Energy

There are probably more ways to save on energy than the ones I have listed here. Beginning a frugal home mindset in the new year, and establishing the goal of saving money applies to all areas. High utilities in the winter can be adjusted with a few modifications.
