Setting Goals And Schedules With Kids

February 24, 2014 By Michelle Knight 6 Comments

Each day brings something different.  In a season where it is difficult to get household chores completed because I am busy with children’s activities or homeschooling causes me to scale back my efforts.  My goals must be different than a season where I have small children that need my constant attention, or a teenager that needs to be driven to an activity.

It has taken me awhile to realize that at this stage in my life I cannot get everything done at once.  My goals need to be different and measured on a different time scale. My husband and I need to work together as a team to get housework done.

Without accepting this change, I was very stressed out because my “to do” list was not getting accomplished in the manner that was satisfactory to me!  After taking a step back, I realized that there will be a time when I don’t have my current responsibilities and work will get done.  At the end of the day I would rather remember my time with my little children and teen as fun times, not times where mom is agitated because the dishes are still in the sink or the floors still need to be swept.

This is my new current goal chart, time management system and to do list.  Since we have a newborn in the house scheduling any kind of specific time frame is not possible.

Time Management                             Weekly Goals                              To Do List

7:00 am-feed baby                              Write 2 blog posts                        Library
8:00 am-breakfast                                Pass out 50 Avon books              Log attendance for school
straighten house, baby take
nap, clean one area in the house
for 10 min.                                           Read 1 chapter in current book   order a new planner

10:00 am-start school                                                                                 schedule appts. for eye Dr.
                                                                                                                    and dentist.
feed baby
game time with kids                              Update 100 day challenge           Work on boy scout health
                                                                                                                   forms
12:30- lunch/naptime                            Spend 10 min. daily with each child
   1:00 pm- feed baby
3:00- start dinner, prepare for evening activities
(every 3 hours feed baby)

7:00 pm- start bedtime routine

9:00pm- quit and go to bed

I allow myself a weekly schedule that is flexible with room for change.  No two days are alike in our home which gives room for spontaneity, and investing in my children is my priority right now.

As a mom of 3, blogger, writer and entrepreneur, I could not function without some sort of schedule. Great job on yours!

“At the end of the day I would rather remember my time with my little children and teen as fun times, not times where mom is agitated because the dishes are still in the sink or the floors still need to be swept.” That’s the thing right there! And I think you sound totally organized!

I agree that schedules that allow for flexibility are key when kids are young. I developed my own weekly planner and see my menu plan and cleaning goals for the week. It gets shifted around what I fo each day but in the end, I try to focus on getting it accomplished some time during the week.

I hope you will stop by and link up to 3 of your posts on my Small Victories Sunday linky that’s open all week!

It definitely helps to have a schedule. Even though my home is probably not as hectic as yours (one child at school and one at home), I still find it helps to write out my daily chores/goals.
