Some may argue that it is not possible to pursue frugal living in the suburbs. Frugal living is not only for the country and farms, or people who seem to be extreme. Families can live frugal in the suburbs and still lead a fun life. I have lived in the suburbs all of my life, but to be honest, I have never noticed living a more frugal life than anyone else.
In fact people who have a lot of money lead very frugal lives. By choice the cars my parents drove were used versus new. It is not more expensive living in one area or the other, to me frugal living in the suburbs can be utilized by choices. Millionaires do not on the average live and spend money extravagantly. They live like they are broke. Spending is a choice, not a lifestyle. Frugal Life in the suburbs has to be a lifestyle, then it can implemented in any place.
Frugal Living Tips
- Cut your own grass. So many people pay to have their grass cut. Saving this money. People who cut their own grass can get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, drink a ton of water(admittedly it gets hot) and have the satisfaction of a beautiful yard.
- Find out if chickens are allowed in your area. I called downtown to our Mayors’ office to find out if in our area of the suburbs if we could have chickens. Indeed, we can! I had chickens growing up and knew they are good for so many different frugal living categories. Eggs, bugs, food source (mine are pets) not too mention they are a great learning experience for homeschoolers. I joke with my kids ” what came first the chicken or the egg”? That question alone has been intriguing over many dinner conversations.
- Hang your clothes on the clothesline. This simple trick alone saves SO much electricity. Once you do it a few times the time it takes to hang the clothes gets quicker and quicker. I hang ours out to dry even on cloudy days. If it isn’t raining mine go out. Frugal living tips are everywhere.
If your family wants to try to save even half on grocery bills, or electric bills, use google and write down a few tips. It is always a good idea to try something new. Implement one new thing each season. Maybe keep a record on google sheets of how much is saved in this area you are focusing on.
Frugal living in the suburbs is just as easy as frugal living anywhere. People are people everywhere. Spending money has become the norm instead of abnormal.
