Why Green Cleaning Is Important

April 28, 2017 By Michelle Knight 3 Comments

Green cleaning is important to help reduce allergens, chemicals, and other harmful substances in our homes. Store bought cleaning products may smell good, but there are harsh chemicals used to make them. Green cleaning products do not have big long words posted in the ingredient list.

We started to use cloth diapers on our third child. Why? I was worried about the chemicals that are put in diapers. This was a huge concern to me due to studies showing that in the past 20 years more people are coping with infertility. The environment is another reason that I used cloth diapers. Statistics proved that it takes diapers a long time to break down in the landfills.

A love for the planet and concern for future grandchildren drove me to green products on my babies.

Green Product Idea Uses:

  1. Home cleaning products.
  2. Cloth diapers can be used instead of store bought diapers.
  3. Homemade laundry soap will keep chemicals off of skin.
  4.  Homemade soap can be made to use for hands and dishes.
  5. Cleaning tools made from socks and other household items.

My oldest son showed signs of ADHD, after much research I removed all cleaners from my home. Like any good mother on a mission I went looking for answers. Contacted many companies and researched books at the library. As the internet information grew that was another area for my research. Studies did show that chemicals in laundry soap could cause focus issues with children.

Out with the old store bought cleaners and laundry soaps. During my research  I contacted companies that sold green cleaning products.

Several reputable company reps introduced their green cleaning products and uses for my home. The products were very good, but expense was an issue. Green cleaning had to be frugal, safe and life changing to work.

In the end good old vinegar and water won.

Homemade wipes are easy to use and make so when my eight year old cleans the bathroom it is all natural products he is using. No need to wash his hands after a store bought wipe.

Finally, plain hot water cleans well. It may not take off dirt, but it is sanitizing.

Why Green Cleaning is A Good Idea:

Green cleaning saves money.

The products can be made at home and are kid friendly.

Supports a healthier lifestyle.

Recycling is vital.

Our environment does not need aerosol sprays and chemicals tearing down our air and protection against the elements.

Steps to Make A Change:

Don’t change everything in the house at once. Pick the most important area, research, start the change.

Today I am giving away a list of homemade cleaning recipes to help with your green cleaning program. Feel free to download:

I’ve often said people have really over-complicated cleaning these days with special cleaners for this surface or that. I often use plain water when cleaning, but sometimes I use a spray bottle that contains a few drops of dish soap and the rest is water. Baking soda is my scrub of choice and I’ll sometimes use vinegar/water in a spray bottle – it all works just fine. I’m in full agreement with you – less chemicals in our home is a GOOD thing! Thanks for sharing! (Stopping by from the Good Morning Monday’s Link Party)
